2003 Kentucky Teaching & Learning Conference
Stop by to visit with staff of the Collaborative for Teaching and Learning at exhibit booth number 319 at the Kentucky Teaching & Learning Conference, March 6-8 at the Kentucky International Convention Center in Louisville. CTL staff will be available to provide information about programs and services to schools, including whole-school and targeted professional development, resources to help schools meet the No Child Left Behind mandates.
NEW FOR MIDDLE GRADES! We'll also be demonstrating our new multimedia CD-ROM called Transforming Practice: The Middle Grades, which showcases the characteristics of high performing middle schools in light of the unique needs of the young adolescent. Loaded with information to help middle school educators, the CD shows actual classroom video footage demonstrating the new teaching strategies and instructional approaches presented. An excellent resource debuted at KTLC!
CTL staff will also be presenting workshops at the conference. Look for the following in your KTLC program guide:
Reducing the Gap: Assessing School and Classroom Practices. Presented by Sheila Smith-Anderson and Dr. Deborah Walker. This session will engage participants in identifying school and classroom factors contributing to the achievement gap. Participants will leave with three things: a process for collecting and analyzing school data, specific strategies for making their classrooms more culturally responsive, and a list of resources for addressing the gap.
Meaningful Mathematics for Middle-Schoolers. Presented by Jan Broyles. As a middle school math teacher have your young adolescent learners ever asked you the following question: "When are we ever going to use this?" Come participate in a learning session designed to assist you in engaging your students in rigorous mathematics content through integrated, technology-based instruction.
Gathering and Responding to Evidence of Student Learning: How to Learn From What Kids Do Every Day. Presented by Amy Lynn Awbrey. This session will provide teachers and instructional leaders with a specific protocol for examining student work that can be used to determine next steps for student learning, while also providing a self-initiated reflection opportunity for teachers to examine the quality of their own instructional decision-making.
After Brain Research - What Then? Presented by Mary Anne Lock and Freda Klotter. Participants will explore varied instructional and assessment strategies based on current brain research. Diverse learning styles and multiple intelligences will be highlighted. Literacy strategies will be embedded, as the arts are used as a tool for all students to deepen understanding and become proficient across content standards. This session is designed so that educators may leave with strategies to enhance learning for students from diverse populations.
Developing Professional Community in Schools. Presented by Dr. Deborah Walker. This session will engage participants in understanding the qualities that contribute to professional community and in assessing those qualities in their own school.
