From 2002 to 2005 Collaborative staff worked district-wide in Evansville Indiana on the development of a literacy leadership cadre of high school and middle school teachers who work in a variety of disciplines. The leadership cadre focused on developing an understanding of the application of literacy-based approaches in discipline-specific classrooms, and how these strategies can create a more rigorous learning environment in the content classroom. In addition, members of the leadership cadre worked with CTL's Educational Program Consultants to develop their skills as mentors and coaches for other colleagues in their schools.
This work took place over a period of three years, and involved both formal workshops and ongoing coaching meetings where teachers explored new concepts, learned new strategies, examined student work that resulting from their field work, shared mentoring experiences, and planned for ongoing implementation in their schools, mentoring both students and fellow teachers in the development of cross-disciplinary literacy.
